Port Royal in 1600
In the 1600’s
Port Royal, Jamaica, gained popularity amongst those in maritime industries. It was overflowing with swashbucklers and buccaneers who were revered for the reputation as drunks and immoral people. It was soon attributed the name of “The Wickedest City on Earth” Its loose morals attracted many privateers to spend their money in the bustling city.
It has been said that one of the most notorious inhabitants of the island was the great Black Jack Smatt. He was a privateer who became a pirate due to the eventful nature of the job. His unmatched skills in privateering, strong crew and fearful reputation allowed him to rise to success as a great pirate. He amassed a vast fortune from plundering Spanish treasure fleets. However, in 1692 an earthquake struck Port Royal leaving it to lie in ruins. It is not known whether Smatt was lost in the earthquake or not, yet it is said that he disappeared around this time. The legend has been kept alive through his descendants who some say still inhabit the island making a living from maritime endeavors as Black Jack Smatt once did. when an earthquake struck Port Royal in 1692.
