His unmatched skills in privateering, strong crew and fearful reputation allowed him to rise to success as a great pirate. He amassed a vast fortune from plundering Spanish treasure fleets. However, in 1692 an earthquake struck Port Royal leaving it to lie in ruins. It is not known whether Smatt was lost in the earthquake or not, yet it is said that he disappeared around this time. The legend has been kept alive through his descendants who some say still inhabit the island making a living from maritime endeavors as Black Jack Smatt once did. when an earthquake struck Port Royal in 1692. After the calamity Black Jack Smatt was history and never to be seen again along with the islands sinful reputation. Earthquake that destroyed The Port Royal in 1692

During the disastrous earthquake of 1692
Port Royal was destroyed. It was at this time
that the islands sinful reputation was demolished and the daring pirate
Black Jack Smatt disappeared. He operated in the
Caribbean waters,
stealing great hordes of treasures from, legend has it, better armed
and larger ships.

contributed to its reputation as “The Sodom of the
New World” home to: Cutthroats, Pirates and Harlots. The islands lack of rules, regulations and morality made it appear to be an anarchic state. This created an allure for
wrongdoers who traveled to the island to spend their wealth on ill pursuits.
Port Royal was originally the mainstay for privateers; however when
the British and Dutch government failed to submit letters of marquee
against the Spanish treasure fleets, the privateers turned to the
more lucrative act of pirating. Amongst these priavetters turned  pirate was Black Jack Smatt.

Black Jack Smatt caught the attention of many due to his desire to
succeed in the
New World, contributing heavily to the triumphs of pirates.

His unrivalled skill in pirating and determination to succeed led him to be
one of the most spoken about pirates in
Port Royal.
